On February 17, Honeywell announced that it will establish a joint venture with Avangard Innovative, a leader in the plastic recycling industry (hereinafter referred to as Avangard), to build an advanced recycling plant in Texas, USA. The new plant will use Honeywell's recently introduced UpCycle process technology, which converts plastic waste into recycled polymer feedstock for the production of new plastics.

Honeywell's new UpCycle process technology is designed to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels in the manufacture of virgin plastics, enabling a circular economy for plastics. When combined with other chemical and mechanical recycling processes and improvements in collection and sorting processes, the UpCycle process technology is expected to increase the proportion of global recyclable plastic waste from the current 15% to 90%.

Avangard is the largest plastics recycler in the Americas and the first company to adopt UpCycle process technology in the United States. Honeywell and Avangard will form a joint venture to jointly own and operate a state-of-the-art plastic recycling facility at Avangard's NaturaPCR facility in Waller, Texas. Expected to start production in 2023, the plant will convert 30,000 metric tons of mixed waste plastic into Honeywell's recycled polymer feedstock annually.

"By partnering with professional recycling and waste management companies, Honeywell can bring advanced recycling technology to the source of recycling, helping to close the plastic supply chain." President and CEO of Honeywell Performance Materials and Technology Group "UpCycle process technology expands the range of recyclable plastics to include those that would otherwise not be recyclable, allowing Honeywell to play a key role in driving the circular plastic economy," said Vimal Kapur.

"Jointly building a state-of-the-art joint venture recycling facility with Honeywell further demonstrates Avangard Innovative's commitment to protecting the environment by achieving zero waste to landfill," said Rick Perez, CEO of Avangard. The solution uses a modular plant design concept that allows for easy deployment and installation, while striking the right balance between economies of scale and the amount of plastic waste generated locally.”

The partnership follows Honeywell's recent announcement of a joint venture with Sacyr, a global engineering and services company headquartered in Spain, that further expands the application of UpCycle's process technology. Honeywell will form a joint venture with Sacyr to build a state-of-the-art plastic recycling plant in Andalusia, southern Spain, that is expected to convert 30,000 metric tons of mixed waste plastic into Honeywell recycled polymer feedstock annually.

Honeywell's UpCycle process technology was developed by Honeywell's Sustainable Technology Solutions division of Honeywell UOP. This state-of-the-art technology follows Honeywell's commitment to delivering high-impact, sustainable environmental solutions for customers and society.

Honeywell has a long history and achievements in sustainability innovation, such as Solstice's new generation of low-GWP hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerants, blowing agents, aerosol propellants and solvents that can transform the market. Reduce the greenhouse gas emissions impact of existing products by more than 99%. In addition, Honeywell pioneered the Ecofining process, which uses inedible natural oils, animal fats and other waste materials as feedstocks to produce Honeywell Green Diesel and Honeywell Green Jet Fuel.
